The story of Mahishasura Mardini was introduced by Rishi Markandeya in Devi Mahatmayam. Adi Shankaracharya (ஆதி சங்கரர்) composed Mahishasura Mardini Strotram (மஹிஷாசுர மார்டினி ஸ்தோத்திரம்) as a commentary.
Mahishasur Mardini is an incarnation of Goddess Durga which was created to kill the demon Mahishasur. She is the fierce form of Goddess Durga where she is depicted with 10 arms, riding on a lion and carrying weapons.
